If you just have to mess with a good thing, do it the right way.

VMaxx CoilOvers

Post by TURBOCOOPER »

Does any one have the VMaxx adjustable coilovers on their car? And if so what problems if any did you run into with them?

A little bite of info on the problems I am having:

I have a 2004 base Cooper, when I ordered the coilover from Minimania nowhere did it say for stock rims and tires so i put the on with my 17" rims and tires and the front tires rubbed the springs. Called MiniMania and they said it was for stock tires and rims....REALLY....who orders adjustable coilovers with stock rims and tires??? So they called the manfacturer and they stated with aftermarket rims and tires I would need spacers, so I went to Tampa and had 8mm front and 10mm rear spacers made gave me 1/2" space between the tire and spring...no problem went to drive it and its making a clunking noice call the manfacturer up and asked what the HELL. Now I am told you need to replace the struct bearing mount...so....I order two news one put them on the clunking noice went away took it in for an alignment and now the tires rub the fender. They are adjusted all the way up and still less than a finger clearance between tire and fender.

Again I called the manfacturer and they stated that if they are all the way up I should have at least 2" of space between the tire and fender maybe something else is wrong....try adjusting the camber plates........ahhhh ok where do they adjust and why didn't they do that on the alignment rack. I know why becuase their not adjustable. Than they tell me to take it to a customer suspension shop and have them align everything becuase tire kingdom probally went to factory settings. I sure if they did that I would have clearance.

Oh did I mention that I went and bought 16"rims and tires to solve the space between tire and spring...

So I am looking for anyone feedback on this and how to solve them since a simple $700 project turned in to a $2000 project.

Thanks
Joe

Good grief! And nobody replied yet? I'm sorry about your problems, but I can't help. Good luck.

Joe Call Ian over at Maitland Importers, I know that he has a full suspension on his car and should be able to answer your questions.

Maitland Importers - 407 425 0545

And if he can not answer it then ask him for Chi at Dynasty Automotive - Chi Does all the local race cars setup and Alignment.

Chi - 407 896 8700

Sorry both are in Orlando, but the car will not cost you anything, and well you spent enough already!

I will give them a call and see what they have to say, maybe I can bring it to one of them and had them set it up.

Thanks

C'mon. The mini community really needs to start acting like tuners, not consumers, that's why the marketplace is so saturated with Snake Oil. Always stop and take a moment before you let the Mod bug bite you. Let's ponder this comparison. Vmaxx sells a $500 bargain bin all round suspension. The Mini comes stock with a BMW suspension, a brand synonymous with unsurpassed engineering and incredible handling..... Why would you replace a BMW suspension with a borderline pep boys special?????? That's insane. In all honesty, get your hands on some JCW springs, and throw on a 22mm rear sway bay. If you wanna do better, you ain't gonna surpass what you got without shelling out 5k on a top tier bilstein.
