NASA - Sebring - March 31-April 1, 2012

Postby James » Tue Dec 20, 2011 11:30 pm

NASA Florida has a track event at Sebring International Raceway on March 31 - April 1, 2012. I've contacted the club for more information and to find out how Sunshine MINIs can participate. I will post the reply and all of the details I find out. To enter a full event (not "Hyperdrives"), you'll need to join NASA, which is normally $45 per year. For 2012, they are offering discounts on your membership/first event registration. You can do the full High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) or a Hyperdrive.

Hyperdrives: Hyperdrives will tentatively be offered on Saturday. This is one HPDE1 equivalent track session plus classroom and you are assigned an instructor. It is intended for those new to the sport - it is our cheapest & easiest way to get on track at speed. You do not have to be a NASA member to participate in the Hyperdrive, but spaces are limited.

HPDE1 Beginner/novice drivers: An instructor is automatically assigned to you. Passing is allowed on designated straightaways with a point-by.

See the NASA Florida website at http://www.drivenasafl.com/speed.

I am very interested. I was planning to go Sebring the weekend before with Chin Motorsports, but would love to go with other MINIs if this works out!

Might have to see if I can pull this as an early birthday present to myself. :) Haven't done a track day since pre-kids.

Hopefully you can make it happen! The more the merrier!

BTW, James, do you have any info on the discounts you mentioned above?

Very tempting...I haven't been out much over the last year. I really do enjoy the NASA events much more than PBOC ones.

I did get a reply from NASA. They didn't offer any new information or any group discount or anything. So we'd all be signing up as individuals.

[F]urther details haven't been finalized yet but the typical 2-day entry fee for HPDE is around $400. We do offer a limited number of 1-day entries for $275 or so, just not in the HPDE1 beginner group (that is a two day program by design.) We will also have Hyperdrives - single classroom session then a single HPDE1 equivalent track session with an instructor, no membership required, for $75 on Saturday morning. There are limited numbers of Hyperdrives available and they usually fill up quickly. We may also be doing some autocrossing at Sebring that weekend, TBA soon.

Bump! The more MINIs the better!

Also, I imaging registration will be opening soon since registration for Homestead (3 weeks prior) is open now.

Haven't decided on NASA yet. Kinda depends on what's going on and if someone will give me a co-drive I can use to win some tires. I will be a Chin the Weekend Prior in a Boss 302.

Ian: while not the ride you are looking for, i would love to see you do some laps in my car. when i have some more seat time and a comp license, i would like to hire you as a coach/co-driver if you are interested. i hope this isn't too much of a conflict of interest. you know that i have always regarded you as a separate entity from your sponsor. i will be at the Homestead NASA event earlier in March as well.

I would love to. I've gotta kinda watch my schedule for March as my wife is due with a baby girl at the end of February. I'm trying not to plan any racing though march and April as I'm sure I'll pay for it dearly trying to leave the house for a weekend. That being said I've kinda promised some friends I'll do a chump car race some time around there. I haven't told her yet, i'm certain that will get veto'd. Driving the Boss with Chin might even get an X though it. I've been waiting to get this boss on Sebring for some time now.

Greg you might enjoy this. I snuck down to homestead to run the saturday race for the SCCA National. Ran 1:31.8 at Homestead.

I'd definitely be interested to hear your thoughts on the Boss afterward. Seems like a very capable car even off the showroom floor.

Maybe I can get over to Sebring that weekend, too, just to watch.

I Autocrossed it a few months back and it's an awesome car. Likes to slide. Breaks the rears (295's) loose in 2nd gear after your pointed straight... ie roll though the corner and roll into the power and once your straight and you can mat it... then it lights em up. Pretty cool car with more then enough power. I'm slightly bias as I like big heavy, soft, overly powered cars. They just make everything so much more interesting.

Interesting, thanks for the review. I personally prefer the Boss to the brute force GT500s. It seems like, for the most part, lack of power isn't the limiting factor here.

Being Brutally honest. If I were in the Market I'd get the V6 with the performance Package. I rented a V6 (300hp) and drove it from Seattle to LA on the Pacific coast hwy. Other then the Automatic being very annoying (rental car) I felt it had better balance then then Boss. 200lbs less weight on the nose of the car made a dramatic driving difference. It wasn't as fast (obviously) but it was nicer to drive and less jumpy. And still plenty fast. Oh and I averaged 31.5mpg on a twisty road for 2200miles. And I wasn't driving it trying to get good mileage. My friends Boss is lucky to do 18mpgs on the interstate. Plus the V6 with the performance pack can be had for around $25k where the boss is over 40k.

The V6 is an incredible bargain, no doubt about it. You can pick one up for $20k and go from there just adding take-off parts from Bosses, GTs, and GT500s. Of course, whatever aftermarket suspension stuff works for the V8s usually works for the V6s, too.

The biggest limiting factor for people buying them is that people think they're buying some secretary's car because it's a V6. That means a lot of people miss out on a great car.

I know how it goes because I own a '00 V6 myself that makes GT whp, has Cobra brakes, Mach 1 suspension, etc... And it cost relatively little to do it.

Very interesting that you see it that way, too. It's true though, when you think about it... You could buy 2 V6s for the price of a BOSS.

That and CFT just came out with a turbo kit for the V6 that puts it well north of 500hp for like $4k.

Can't beat that! Would the stock engine hold up to that for track days? The Ecoboost Twin-Turbo engines are in the same family, but I don't remember how the internals and such compare between the Mustang's 3.7L and the 3.5L EcoBoost.

Ian: that pass after T6 was insane. on the first viewing, i was saying to myself, " is he really going to go for it?" well done. a very quick time, even for the that configuration. i know you hate missing T10. See you at Homestead in March? Congrats on the upcoming new addition.
