Homestead with Nasa 05-22-2010

Postby yachtcomputing » Tue May 04, 2010 2:36 am

Hey Guys! I'm lonely! I miss you all! I just ran Chin at Sebring, Hot but a great time! Buddied up with my new found friends at http://www.trackweekend.com. Good people.

Who's going to Homestead 5-22-2010?

I dropped my personal best from 2:49 to 2:42 The Extra HP and the LSD is working wonders. I think I got a much smoother entry into corners now as well.

Here are a few Vids

An amalgamation of Ramon's GT3 Cam and Mine, (all three of us blew by the vette.)

Ok I'll admit it - the Green Hornet enjoyed "the ride". Tough thing, I'm up here in St. Augustine - is there a local club where I can get my feet wet and when I feel worthy - make the trek south? :-k

I'll also need time to get some added HP - only sporting a Cooper S Clubbie and an extra, say, 30+ HP would be nice. I noticed a black Porsche blow past everyone in the last min or so of the race - 8-[

Congrats Pete!

I Have to admit it took me from 1980 Autocrossing a Datsun 510 Until June 2008 after I got a sweetheart deal on the Mini, to get the savings thing to work to where I could get on the track. The MLC in my License plate stands proudly for Mid Life Crisis! Much respect to you and good luck!

As it turns out my Mother's 88th Birthday is May 25 and she wants to Ride Homestead as a present........I took her on some exit and entrance ramps and she liked it, she liked it!

Soooo I'll be signing up for at least Saturday the 21st.

Hope to see you there!

St Augustine isn't THAT far from Sebring! As to HP remember that this isn't racing. It is learning to drive your car to the max. The Max on a Stock MIni is far beyond that of lots of other cars. I added 35 HP a Limited SLip Diff and took 1.5 secs off my time. I fixed major problems with the guy holding on to the steering wheel and knocked 7 secs off.......Extra HP gets you down the straight faster, finese and the Mini's handleing gets you through the corners quicker. If you look at where I climb up on high HP cars it's in the corners. My instructor that cleared me for solo noted that vs a VW GTI that was behind me, every straight he caught up (that's hp) every curve he lost ground (that's skill) My suggestion is don't let the lower hp make you miss honing the skill.

As Sbox and many others can tell you, it a ball to get a PPB (Porsche Point By) they soo hate to have to give one out!

Wow, that S2000 was well off line in a couple of spots. What interesting is you guys were pretty even on the straights. I would have expected you to walk on by him easily. S2000's don't pick up power easy. I have one. It's a challenge to get them beyond 220whp. Mine with a Hondata flash, $1600 header, Cams, no cat, headwork and a fresh motor will be very happy if it does 230whp.

I wasn't aware of that as I have had trouble in the past with S2000's. It was an incredibly hot day so I suspect that I was heat soaking badly. I'll have to go look for specs on weight to defend my honor! :)

Are you going to be at Homestead? I Just Signed up for Sat and Sunday. Sbox?

Also, Ian, do you know of a really high capacity Oil cooler? My oil temp was soaring despite my external unit....

I don't off hand. Believe it or not I run mine without an oil cooler at all. I run a 50 weight oil and also Mine is built for only one hot lap at a time. I bring just enough gas and alcohol in the tank to baby an out lap, stand out on it in turn 17 and left off and coast after the lap. Not doing repeated laps keeps the oil temps down. I've been thinking about doing the oil cooler as I was thinking about doing the Redline event at sebring in August and that would be 3 laps.
Don't feel bad, the S2000's are fairly quick around a track. S2Ki has an S2000 Best Lap time chart with virtually stock ones doing sub 2:10 at VIR and such. On my S2000 it was stock + a cage , 3000lbs, Hondata Reflash, Moton Shocks (stock springs), cat back exhaust, and Hoosiers and I ran in the 2:33's in it at sebring but in the winter. I think our summer testing times were 2:36's in it. At Road Atlanta it did a High 1:40 but that was after the rules gave us the CR package (better springs). The S2k in CR package trim and my mini are pretty close, My mini is about 10 mph quicker on the straights (S2k = 122-123 mph, mini = 135-136mph). But the S2000 has such a better center of gravity and so much more rubber on the ground (245 tires). It's a fair bit quicker through the corners. It also has Better aero but the Mini despite being similar Power to weight out runs it handily once pointed straight.
I'm converting mine to a NASA class for the 13hrs of VIR and I expect to do very very low 2:2X's at sebring. But I hope the Mini will go sub 20... we'll see Block came back from machine shop yesterday.

PS what kinda oil temps were you seeing... the Focus race car takes the green flag at just under 300 degrees and spends the whole race with the gauge barried...I'm guessing 340-350.

Well though the track was HOT and slippery a fun time was had by all!

I run 285 oiltemp if I shift at 6K and 300-305 if I push it to 7200 (for a good reason such as passing porsches and S2000's :) )

I did have a hoot and took my 88 year old mother around for hot laps (her request) unlike Ricardo Patrese's Wife she LOVED it and I have video to prove it!

If you watch the vid she actually giggles in some of the harder turns. I of course am very proud.
In stark contrast to this!

So just a thought but were you always having these oil temp issues?

Wouldn't know as I have only had the Oil temp guage recently! On cooler days it would run up to 280-285

Hmm. I'll put a gauge in mine and keep track. I put a RMW oil cooler in just this week to handle the extra power.
