Photo contest - Rules & Entries Here - NOVEMBER

Postby Aluvendale » Sat Nov 14, 2009 5:28 pm

Rules & Submission instructions:

Only photos submitted to the contest thread will be entered into the contest.

Your photo must include at least a classic Mini and/or a new MINI!

This Month's topic:

**CONTRAST**

Photo must contain a MINI and/or Mini.

The monthly photo contest is designed to give you a reason to get out of the house and shoot, be creative, show your own personal style, and to have your work voted on by the members of Sunshine MINIs. The winner will receive a prize and will have his or her picture displayed on the front page of http://www.sunshineminis.org until the next contest winner is announced.

Please read ALL of the rules:

1. One entry per member per contest period.
2. The photo must contain a MINI/Mini, comply with the site guidelines, be no larger than 800 x 600, and under 200kb in size.
3. Something that is shot between the 1st of the month and the end of each month of the assignment.
4. Must be your original work.
5. You retain all copyrights to the photo, and will receive credit for your photo if selected.
6. Deadline for all entries is the last day of each month.
7. All entry photos may be submitted to this thread and in addition will be placed in a contest gallery.

The photos will be hosted on the SSM server and there will be a thread posted in the in the MINI Photography Forum with all photos, and a poll on the 1st- 7th of the following month.

For the purpose of voting, each photo will be listed with usernames in the order submitted. Each user is allowed one vote. The photo with the most votes by the end of the poll will be displayed on the front page of Sunshine MINIs for the rest of that month.

Acceptable adjustments:

1. Cropping (when in doubt crop it out if it improves the aesthetic qualities)
2. Contrast and brightness adjustments within reasonable limitations (these are available to the traditional photographer in the darkroom)
3. Color balance within reasonable limitations (also available to darkroom printers)
4. Selective Dodge and Burn adjustments (also available to darkroom printers)
5. Dust and scratch retouching (also available to darkroom printers)

The bottom line is any reasonable option available to the traditional film photographer that improves the aesthetics but does not alter the integrity of the original scene. You know MINImal adjustments.

The not permitted category would include all of those special filters that alter the integrity of the original scene. Examples: solarization, cut and paste, distortions, artistic renderings and modifications that depart from the original scene. You know the flying pigs, swirls, starbursts, and rainbow category.

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY MOTORING....uh...errrr.....SHOOTING

Credits to Kahlil, who I stole the rules from.

November Photo Contest: Contrast

Postby RED MINI » Sun Nov 15, 2009 6:32 pm

An 1839 photographic process and a 2004 Mini Cooper. Though widely attributed to Daguerre, the Salted Print was actually invented by Talbot and perfected by John Hershel. Daugerre, like Matthew Brady was a fraud who claimed fame from other's labors. This print was shot on a DaVinci 4x5 pinhole camera at f:/231 for 16 seconds on a day with a heavy overcast sky on ISO 200 film. It was done as a Contact POP (Print Out Process) processed in a water bath containing Kosher Salt and a 3% solution of household ammonia.

Chris, did you intend to enter this in the November photo contest? Maybe you accidentally hit "New Topic" instead of "Reply?"

Is it supposed to be taken in Nov? I didn't use Photoshop. Took the pic with my iPhone, then used an app to only color the MINI and Emma. If it's disqualified it's all good. Just wanted to share the pic! :D

Yeah, technically, the photo is supposed to be taken in the month of the contest. And any digital editing is supposed to be limited to traditional darkroom tweaks- contrast, brightness, etc. Regardless of whether it's Photoshop or any other program.

Nonetheless, I dig the photo. Nicely done!

You could colorize parts of a B&W photo by hand.

Hopefully my Photography teacher gives me back my B&W MINI cooper shots before the contest is over. She wanted them for some photo art display thing at the college. No idea when I'll be getting them back...

A little color contrast...I tried all month to find a nice purple building nearby, but no luck. Any hints from our local photography experts on photographing a yellow car without it looking washed out? Seemed that no matter what I did, it almost always looked overexposed.

Have you tried a neutral density filter?

A circular polarizer will probably do better as it will darken the sky, thus enhancing the yellow by contrast. You might try (if digital) increasing the color saturation if you have one that sophisticated, or adding a little curve to the gamma settings. I just opened the menu bar in one of my student's D-40's and went to Optimize Image, to submenu - Custom to submenu - hue adjustment and played there for a few minutes and got some decent results...there are a lot of things in the camera which should help you achieve this higer degree of saturation, but if it is a simple point and shoot with no menu options, go for a ND 1 or 2 or a polarizing filter. You might also want to shoot at a higher resolution to increase the pixel depth.

I have the polarizing filter for my Nikon, but unfortunately I forgot to charge it and had no life when the sky cleared up for this shot. Had to pull out Nickie's point-n-click. Luckily I had it with me or I would have been rather ticked to make the drive only to find my Nikon was dead. I'll have to try it with the filter and see how much of a difference it makes.

Another easy solution would be to shoot in in a late afternoon sun where you will experience a change in color temperature toward the warm side. This should soften the yellow without washing it out yet still give some great contrast to the sky whose color will be shifting more toward the cool side..nice contrast, nice shot.
