SSM & GSM Get Together

Postby Sarah » Mon Aug 15, 2005 7:23 pm

Gulf South Motoring Club mentioned that they would like to do a get together early next year.

The thinking right now would be to meet halfway.

If there is enough interest I would step up and work the details with them....

Let me know!

We are motoring to Key West. Perhaps we should also motor to Pensacola to cover both ends. :)

Here's an addendum to the idea:

Gulfport or Biloxi, Mississippi as the get together point. The Las Vegas of the southeast United States? I remember staying at the Grand Casino in Gulfport, and that was my introduction to gambling ;)b and free drinks

I say lets do it half way also. Where is the majority of everyone from? South Florida? Central florida? The panhandle? Lets think of a destination or Point of Interest to all meet then we can get something going!! Sarah yall Know Florida better than I do so hit me up for some ideas!! lol I'm about 45-50 min from Mississippi but I would say we could meet somewhere between Gulfport over to the Pinsicola area. Are there any events being held around Jan-March that anyone knows of?

I love Biloxi. I went to see Alegria at the Beau Rivage and didn't leave the hotel for 5 days. I'm ready to go back.

Well, unfortunately I think we can rule out a Biloxi/Gulfport meet in early 2006. That area won't be recovered for years and I am not exaggerating. Every Casino was decimated.

I am so sad about this... Every year when we'd go out there, I'd marvel at those beautiful homes along the coast that had stood for hundreds of years, withstood all the hurricanes before, and now to hear there is nothing left. We were wondering if Jefferson Davis' house Beauvoir made it out... that place was amazing. I toured it in 2003. Flattened. :(

Its like I told one of my friends. A few years ago we went exploring the area, and we ended up near New Orleans. We didn't stop because I said "We don't have enough time today...we'll do it later." You really tend to take stuff for granted that it will be there forever.

So sad... If I didn't have something that I can't get out of coming up this week, I'd go out there and help. :(

Hey, I know it's bleak looking and hopes and spirits are way down in the Gulf area, but I am a Hurricane Floyd flood survivor from North Carolina.

I was in my final year at East Carolina University when Floyd was on it's way. I was living alone at the time, moved everything upstairs and stayed at my advisors house for the storm. Wicked scary, with the eye passing right over us. (Quite strange to see the trees going one way, stopping completely, then going the other way). Afterwards, roads were washed out, gas prices skyrocketed and people were broken down. What was normally a 4 hour drive to Charlotte, turned into twice that. I had to go further east, ride a ferry, then take back roads to SC, then cross west, then north to my brother's place in Charlotte.

The point of this post is the following:

It's shi**y right now, but let's not call off the meet. It will take a long while to get back to any semblance of what was, but things will get back to up and running. Yes, the casino's have a HUGE hill to climb, so we can meet somewhere else, it doesn't have to be there. We're a very flexible group of people. Besides, whatever stage the Gulf is in when the time comes to meet, it can be a great break from whatever situation people are in.

As far as the RIGHT NOW, help is on it's way and it looks as things are starting to pull together a little. Chaos still reigns a bit, but if there is anything GSM needs, let us know, and I'm sure we can pull together too.

You and the entire Gulf Coast are in my prayers and thoughts!

I agree with Sarah. Plus, a diversion from all the stress put upon all our GSM friends can be highly therapeutic and a welcome recharge.

We are absolutely still on. Location is still to be determined as is the time. I have heard late february or early march as good times for people. Late february would be preferred for me since late march is Vegas.

Hey Everyone, We are having a club meet this Sat and this is one of the topics we will be discussing. Please if anyone has any ideas Shout them out!!! We are shooting for somewhere between the Destin-Panama area so it would be the same distance for most. The only thing is that we would like to make it as fun/adventurous as possible and possibly a 2 day event. We need ideas. If Destin or Panama isn't for you then recommend another place that will be better. Ideas Ideas Ideas!!!!!!!!!! lol
