Just for the MINI Cooper.

Postby thumper460 » Thu Nov 12, 2009 7:43 pm

More and more Cooper people are wanting a bit more power!! As you know there are boatloads of "stuff" for the Cooper "S", but the poor Cooper is still " Just a Cooper". ( not a bad thing...yes?)

Well I think we have hit on a performance combo that might help.

"....Still breaking things in, so I'm taking it a bit easy for now, but I've gotten on it several times and it's very, very nice. It actually chirps the tires shifting into 2nd at WOT and redline, which it never did before.

One of my biggest complaints with the Shrick cam was the peakiness of it - nothing below 4000 RPM's, then all the power from there up and then falling on its face above 6400 RPM. And, a major, major dip in power between 3K and 4K rpms. While Jan's tuning did take some of that out and improve driveability, it couldn't take it all out.

With the current setup (TPR-1 and NS2), the dip between 3-4K RPM's [i]is gone
. It keeps pulling all the way to redline - and I think it would keep going, so I'll need to get that bumped up. No more drop off! Part throttle acceleration is crisp - full throttle is greatness. It actually pulls everywhere, even down low, although the fun really starts at 4000.

As far as the porting and flow work goes, it looked great by eye and feeling around inside the ports . I really think the combination of that kind of attention to detail on the porting work, the slight bump in compression and the NS2 cam made what was good even better.

That was what was determined to help put him where he wanted to be. On a N/A engine the compression is important, as well as the camshaft. I went with the little bump on compression and the NS2 cam, as he sees a lot of track time.. it doesnt mean it is right for all . cool??

Curious if there is any room to oversize the pistons a tad or give it a bit more stroke to increase CC's and give a few more ponies in the stable.

I think I've seen built 1.8L MINIs on NAM before.

Over size pistons are available.. The 1.8 and the 2.0s are a stroked engine with crankshaft/rods/ pistons and it starts getting a bit ( ok.. a LOT) pricey.
BMW did a LOT of research on the OHC engine for the MINI , before deciding on the 1.6 CC's. And if there is a Person running 11.16 et @ 123 MPH in the qtr mile on a 1.6. IMHO the engine is plenty strong to take what ever you want to throw at it. Yes??

1320MINI breaks new record!...

Paul Webster and his MINI One or ‘Old Red’ as she’s known, managed to beat his previous best of 11.77@115mph over the ¼ mile at last weekends FIA "European Finals" event by running a new PB of 11.162@123mph. To put that into perspective for those of you that don’t get the whole ¼ mile thang, that’s 0-100mph in 7.1 seconds! Which makes Old Red as fast as a Pagani Zonda or Porsche Carerra GT in a straight line… from a little supercharged 1.6! This is thanks to adding a few performance parts to the car from 1320’s performance catalogue, but nothing that you can’t buy from them yourself if you want to build your own supercar slayer!

i looked into your TPR-1 or 2 heads, witch im guessing you can fit them in ither Minis...I read them both about a month ago and some time someday im looking to getting one. Do you know the hp/torque a N/A cooper might get.

I post the numbers as/IF I receive them from the people. The HP / Torque numbers can be totally miss leading. And because of that, there are HUGE debates on power gains, by Whom, by which dyno, with what mods.. ect ect. This is why I just post the results, from guys using my stuff ( TPR1 or TPR2 Head or Cam Combos) much easyer to see what people like you and me are getting vs all the riderick on HP/TQ numbers.

There will be power gains.. MPG gains.. and quality of the smile Gains. And finally, I feel, the Coopers can now enjoy the thrill of Moding and going with more power!! Yes??

" I really notice the "pick-up" ponies in first and second; I just let off the clutch, and next thing I know I'm already at 4K, I liked it a lot. ......."
