A Few Tips for the Forums ...

Postby James » Sun Jan 27, 2008 9:05 pm

We don't have many rules around here and despite causing the occasional controversy, it is one of the things that sets sunshineminis.org apart from most MINI/Mini forums. We manage to self-regulate pretty well. That said, I'd like to list a few reminders and tips for the forums:

1. We have one rule: no personal attacks. Otherwise, it is assumed that we are adults with the right of free speech.

2. Please spell-check and proofread your posts before submitting them. Notice the Spell Check button under the box where you type your posts.

3. If you are replying to the post directly before yours, it isn't necessary to quote the previous post, especially if it is long or contains a lot of photos.

4. Please keep posted photos to no more than 800 pixels wide to maintain the proper structure of the forums. Either resize your photos or use some simple HTML to reduce the size and create a link to the full-size photo:

Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.sunshineminis.org/image.jpg">
<img src="http://www.sunshineminis.org/image.jpg" width="800">
</a>

5. If you post really long URLs (for Google Maps, for example), please change the URL to link text to maintain the proper structure of the forums:

Code: Select all
Google Map

If you forget how to do this, just hover over the URL button for help.

6. Please keep signature banners to no more than 500 pixels wide by 100 pixels high to maintain the proper structure of the forums.

7. There is almost five years of archived information here, so please do a search before starting a new thread for help, you may find your question has already been asked and answered.

This is my third anniversary as AdMINIstrator for the Sunshine MINIs website and forums and while I enjoy keeping the forums running and organized, following the guidelines above will save a lot of time for me and the other Admins and Moderators and make the forums more usable for everyone. Thanks.

If you have any comments and suggestions about the guidelines above, please post them here. Motor on!

I wasn't aware that we weren't supposed to advertise non-Mini/MINI items for sale here. If that's the case, then, not to be a smart-ass, why do we even have the "Yellow Pages" forum? Most of the services offered there are not Mini/MINI related.

Yeah, I consider everyone on here friends, and if I were selling something, I'd much rather sell it to someone I know versus going on eBay or putting it in the local paper.

Can we have a thread for non-MINI/Mini items for sale?

Just asking. :)

Seriously, I think a non-MINI section for stuff for sale would be the answer. I haven't sold much, other than Girl Scout Cookies for the BAM folks, but I think it's nice to get a deal from a friend via this forums. (this message has been spell checked)

Many of us are painfully aware of this fact, Caveman. I stop reading your posts when my eyes begin to bleed. :lol:

Non-Mini sale items...

I agree, these items would be nice to have a place to post. There could be rules, or maybe even moderator-approved items only (seems like a feature that might be available in a next-gen version of the forum software... but only if that rule can apply to a single forum, we don't want all posts to be approved first...hmmm...)

I'm chiming in here because last night I got a phone call from a friend of 23 years or (there'bouts) asking me for Mini-buying advice. He wants to sell his truck, and it would be nice to find a buyer rather than trade it in. Finding a buyer for truck might not be easy right now, but if there's a chance of someone here at SSM needing a truck, it would be a good place to advertise it. I'd love to see him get into a Mini, so I'd like to be able to help in any way I can, including helping him sell his truck.

Oh yeah, if anyone needs a fully loaded '05 Toyota Tundra crewcab 4x4... lemme know ASAP!

I think the classifieds should be the CLASSIFIEDS! We are all MINIacs. If we can sell something to a fellow SSMer than great! It shouldn't matter what the item is. MINI or Non-MINI! Nothing dirty! :wink:

Suggested tip:
When a post asking about an event becomes a second post scheduling the event, the first post should just be edited or deleted. No sense in having two post for the same event.

So like pinchfo was bouncing ideas in BAM for a breakfast, and now its a second thread for the event. I like the idea of just moving the original thread to the "dead topic" section.
