P2097 and DME Adaptive Values

Postby Jeveretts » Fri Nov 20, 2009 2:32 am

I just bought my 2002 Mini 2 days ago. It has a SES light on. I put my scanner on it and got a P2097 code, which is Post Cat O2 Sensor reading rich condition. I read somewhere on the web about putting it on a GT1 and resetting the Adaptive values and then clearing the system to fix this problem. The used car dealer I bought it from was clueless and put a new O2 sensor it, I guess because the code had the term "O2 sensor" in it, and they couldn't get past that.
Does anybody else have experience with this? the car seems to run fine, with the exception of a VERY minor occasional stumble at idle, and fuel economy might be a tad less than I would expect (22ish in city, driving nice).

Just to let you all know what fixed this. The P2097 code means Post Catalyst O2 sensor reading rich condition. Naturally you would think to change the rear O2 sensor, but in fact, it was the pre catalyst O2 sensor failing that caused the problem. The Post catalyst O2 sensor was working correctly in identifying the rich condition. P2096 is exactly the same except for a lean condition.

Keen diagnostic skillz. How did you diagnose that it was the pre and not the post?

I just paid $300 to a local dealer who replaced the oxygen sensor, and SES light still comes on............
