February 20 Monthly meet - GEOCACHING

Good afternoon all! I wanted to get a head start on the information for the Feb 20th meet. It will go a lot smoother if everyone has this now and can start setting up sooner rather than later.

First if you have not already join http://www.geocaching.com

It is free for the basic membership. We have had the basic membership for a few months now and we have not had run into any situations where the premium membership would have helped us anymore in the hunt for a cache. There are some perks for the premium membership such as some information is available on caches to premium members only and sometimes special caches. If this sounds like something you would like to do it can always be done later

Next if you have an iphone, you need the geocaching app. It is $9.99 at the app store. If you have a hand-held GPS system then you can get away with not having the app. The cool thing about the app is when you have your account set up on the geocaching site you can choose to auto-post field notes when you find caches. It will also take your current position and find all nearby caches.

There are other GPS apps available for other phones. T-mobile has one that is called Geobeagle for the google and droid phones. I have not researched them completely, but I do believe they do not communicate with the geocaching site. You can also use hand held GPS devices such as the Tom Tom and Garmin you can find reviews here:

If you do not have a GPS device already you are more than welcome to join the group, but the more the merrier because different devices have different accuracies.

I believe found a good Jacksonville Park that has about 9 active caches. I have not been to this particular park before, but that is part of the excitement. Geocaching has taken us so many places we would not have normally been without a purpose. Hopefully the weather will behave, from this far out it will be hard to say.

So for now let us get the memberships set up (again this part is free) and if you have a GPS device you want to try a little bit on your own do it! I will check back in periodically to see how everyone is setting up and if there are any questions

When it gets closer to the date I will post our route. No worries though I will not be the long one I had posted before. If this one goes well we will do a bigger one later

Ahhhh.... I get it now! I'll have to bring the gf since she just got a Droid and I don't think my Dare would do this.

We aren't going to be able to make this meet. Other commitments taking priority and I'll be out early Sunday morning in the weather for the breast cancer marathon. Not sure I want to be outdoors two days in a row. Debbie, I just sent tshirt $$ via paypal. Hopefully this weekend the weather will be better. I just saw on the news that both Sat and Sun the high is supposed to be 70! Woot! See you all @ the Undie 500 if not before then.

well was thinking the afternoon time...1ish 2ish? and I have two areas and it depended on how many MINIS were coming...I wanted not to have issues (or at least minimal issues) with parking. So i have hunted up a San Marco Swing or a Riverside romp
